I do remember as an adult finally realizing that most of the Hakuna Matata song was setup for a fart joke. Timon, at first, embraces Pumbaa as his protector from predatory animals. This is so reminiscent of the experiences of young Black gay men forced to restrict our gender performance to the highest standards of masculinity. From the get-go, the film establishes Timon as a gay-coded, Jewish-coded — his mother calls him a meshuggah at one point — Disney princess.
